Weddings – How to have a unique one

Summary: A wedding day is one of the most important days in a couple’s life – this is the day when they will be starting a new family. Everyone wants it to be an event to remember. With a little bit of effort, everyone can have a unique wedding –just like the relationship.
It is up to the couple to choose whether they want a traditional or a different kind of wedding – the process of planning is to try and customize. Here are a few tips on how to make it the most unique event and also to reflect one’s personality.
Tips for a unique wedding day:
• Picking a theme: A theme brings a sense of unity to the day – try to find the best decorations and the right venue. Whether it is minimalist or rustic chic, the theme should express the couple’s style and will influence planning right from the wedding cards to the food and music.
• Informing with style: How people are informed and invited are the next steps in the wedding plan. Send them out early so that invited parties can block the date. There are so many choices in wedding invitations and it is easy to pick one to suit your budget and personal preference.
• Good music: Not everyone can afford or would want a 10 piece music band – good music makes for a great party. Find a good DJ or musician who will liven up the dance party and take into account guest requests.
• Finding the right space: Try finding something other than a standard conference room at a hotel. Quite a few hotels have great green spaces and lawns – or other elegant spaces. In fact, having the reception on the lawns of a botanical garden makes for a great setting as well – or an art gallery or museum.
• Serving great food: This is one aspect of the wedding that people will remember for a long time. Working with a wedding planner is a good thing as they will be able to find a good caterer to take care of the food or even find the right restaurant. Good prices can be negotiated and with enough advance notice, many restaurants will be able to tailor their menu to serve the varied needs of guests.
• Choosing a Wedding Cake: This is an important part of the celebrations – make sure that the cake, especially if it is a tiered cake, is transported separately and then assembled at the venue to prevent accidents. There are so many great choices in wedding cakes as well – choose wisely and get one within the budget.
• Guest book: Try something new to match the wedding theme. Decorative note paper and envelopes are a great way to get messages, which can later be put together in a scrapbook.
• Photos: Make sure that a photographer and videographer are available to capture the whole event. Guests appreciate getting mementos in the form of wedding pictures or CDs.

Wedding Essentials – Making unforgettable memories

Summary: Weddings are an important occasion in every person’s life – even more so if they are getting married themselves. There are many things that have to be done to make the event a memorable and successful one. The best way to handle such an important event is to make a list of all the important things to be done and tackle them one by one.
Most people are aware of the fact that weddings supposed to be happy and stress free – quite often, wedding days go off without a hitch. There can be occasions when glitches happen – here is a list of essential items to watch for.
Essential items for a Wedding:
Flowers and Cake: These items make the biggest impact on a wedding. One has to ensure that calls are made to vendors – make sure that they have the address of the venue and goods get delivered. If one is working with a wedding planner, the planner should get all the information like phone numbers and timings so that it is handled without a hitch.
Climate Control: Depending on the time of year, make sure that the temperature settings at the venue are appropriate to the season – during the ceremony and reception as well. Guests should be kept comfortable for the duration of the event. The planner should have contact with at least one person at the venue to ensure that heaters or fans are available as needed.
Hair: This aspect has to also be taken into account – don’t try a new hair cut or color just before the wedding. Try out new hairdos a couple of months before the wedding to ensure that looks good and works with the dress. Once the hair style has been picked out it is easy to do on the day of the wedding.
Rings: This is the most important item – rings are required for the wedding ceremony. The responsibility of keeping track of the rings should be handed over to the best man – so that they can be gotten at the appropriate time.
Dress Fittings: Get the fittings done with enough time to make any alterations – the recommended time is 6 weeks. Accessories have to be bought well in advance as well – things like shoes, undergarments, etc. These items can be taken along to the fitting to make sure that the length of the dress is correct and also that they go with the outfit.
Wedding Planner/Coordinator: Many people don’t realize how a wedding coordinator can help. They are lifesavers and can handle every aspect from finding the perfect venue, wedding cards, caterers, helping the bride find the right dress and accessories and so on. Organizing a wedding is an overwhelming task for many. Remember the dos and don’ts while planning your wedding. Venue booking, actual ceremony, your dress, timelines, expenses etc are all vital aspects. Do them the right way. Also take care not to be too anxious while you are planning.
There are several things to note while effectively planning for a wedding. Draw out a complete guest list. This is a vital thing as your wedding hall booking would also depend on this count. Set a realistic wedding budget. Dress, location and other expenses are the major components. Book the wedding venue as early as possible. This will help you to set your date of choice. Also have your honeymoon dates as close as possible to your wedding dates. This will avoid putting off the honeymoon altogether.
Make the event memorable:
Keep your guests in mind for the ceremony. Think about how you can provide them a good time during the wedding. Aspects like sumptuous food and drinks, good music etc are contributing factors. Stock enough food and wine and have the ceremony started on time. Select the music one month before the wedding. Choose the right songs for the procession, first dance and parent dances. If you are undecided on the songs, you can ask the DJ for advice.
Now is the time to look at the don’ts. Never put off the seating chart to the last minute. It is not an easy five minute task as is normally thought. Don’t have something just because everybody else is doing it. For example, if you don’t like the wedding cake, just chuck it. Don’t have all your relatives around you when you are selecting your wedding dress. The more opinions are floated, the more confused you will get. Trust your own judgment the best, since you are the best person to decide whether the dress is comfortable for you or not. Have two or three people such as your mother or maid of honor to help you with the decision. Don’t peek too much into microscopic details. Really gauge whether the detail is worth peeking into.
Take care not to procrastinate things. Plan for the vital aspects, well in advance. This will give you enough leeway to correct any mistakes. Do not overspend on your wedding. You should have enough money after your nuptial to buy a house, car etc. Don’t be too stressed out and anxious on the days leading to your marriage. Your engagement is also a time to be enjoyed and not be completely stressed out.

Getting something old symbolizes the continuity whereas something new represented the future for the couple. Something borrowed represented future happiness and something blue represented the color of purity for both the groom and the bride on their wedding day.
It is quite surprising that the tradition of wearing a white wedding gown was actually meant to signify joy and not purity as most people believed. Before the 16th century, this tradition actually was not commonplace. However, when Ann of Brittany wore one in 1499, it quickly became the norm and here we are today. During the reign of the Tudor monarchs the tradition of throwing old shoes at the happy couple’s carriage became known and practiced. If the shoe struck the carriage, it was supposed to signify good fortune for the couple. This is where the modern tradition of tying shoes to the back of the bridal car came about.

Asian Wedding Traditions

Summary: Asian wedding traditions are steeped in culture and religious beliefs. Many of these traditions have been around for thousands of years and little has changed in the way they are practiced.

Asking for Permission
In the Philippines, it is customary for the groom to observe what is called “pamanhikan”. This entails the man to formally ask the parents of the woman he intends to marry for their permission and blessings. During the actual “pamanhikan” itself, the parents discuss with the groom to be where they intend to live, how he will support their daughter and sometimes the topic of when they would be having kids and how many are also touched upon. Once the bride’s father consents to the union, only then will the wedding plans get formalized.
In Thailand, it is considered customary for the groom to cook a meal for the monks in his community prior to the wedding. The wedding only begins after the monk’s give their blessing. During the actual ceremony the groom and bride are seated hands folded and tied with a flower chain. The oldest member of the family has the honor of leading the wedding ceremony where he dips the couple’s hands into a shell that is filled with water. This activity is supposed to bring luck to the couple. In Thailand, wedding ceremonies are considered to be very intimate and private affairs, which are reserved only to close relatives and friends.
In China, wedding traditions vary from place to place and even from province to province. However, the most common trait they all share is the practice of the betrothal of the couple by their parents. There is also the required wearing of a red bridal gown to symbolize wealth and good fortune. There is the use of firecrackers in order to ward off evil spirits. There is usually a go-between that handles negotiations between prospective matches for the families. The dates are then set based on the birth signs of the bride and groom. The preparation for the wedding from the customary betrothal to the actual wedding ceremony is considered quite a complicated process. However, the actual wedding ceremony is quite simple.

In some Indian villages, marriage happens between a woman and an animal such as a donkey, a goat or even a dog. The woman is not expected to lead a life with the animal. It is just a one-time affair. Such a wedding ritual is done as a means to please the God worshipped by the people in those villages. People in those parts believe in ghosts and if the villagers face any problems, they would attribute them to the existence of ghosts in the village. They believe that such a wedding ritual will help in exorcising ghosts.

In Greece, some odd rituals are conducted to announce a marriage between a man and a woman. A young boy who has not even achieved pubescence is chosen for this ritual. The boy would be made to wear a biscuit ring around his neck. The bride would then grab the boy and make him sit on his lap. She would then start biting the biscuit ring surrounding the boy’s neck. It is not as weird as the Indian one described above and there is no animal involved. But, it definitely belongs to the elite list of odd wedding rituals and customs.

In Korean weddings, there is a custom where married friends of the bridegroom are made to hand-carve ducks using wood and gift them to the couple. They are expected to do the hand-carving themselves which is surely not an easy task. Also, the reason why duck is chosen for this ritual is not clear.
